Very awesome beat and melody man, the groove is solid and strong.
Lots of sounds here at different frequencies to help fill the space and make the song sound full.

Only critique is occasionally the sounds seem cluttered and will clash. Most noticeable around 1:05 and 2:08

Overall the mix seems middle heavy, everything is center pan and mid tones. Sometimes putting a "retro" filter on the master can cause this. Anyways cool song and rock on!

wilidacious responds:

much appreciated! i will definitely try to tweak the mixing a bit

Oh hot dog dude this is good, love the grunge/industrial vibe and those vocals are dope dude.... seriously jealous! Rock on man

FOUNDDEADINLA responds:

lol i didnt realize how industrial some of the stuff i write is until youve said it. also thanks for the vocal compliment :)

Nice build up, the bass panning at :23 is great

The slides on the bass mean you really can work that FL piano roll.

The sounds are balanced pretty good too, great depth of sound. I actually also have a MPK mini haha great little piece of hardware to play with the melody and not having to use the keyboard.

Not personally a fan of the genre though, I can acknowledge your skill in FL though!

xYoungMotionx responds:

Thanks! This usually isn't my genre I was just messing around because I want to try every genre, but thanks for the feedback always appreciated.

Pure tension !

The vibe is pretty good, although it's 100% dissonance and never resolves making it uncomfortable to listen to for great length.

Also the the song seems very 1 dimensional everything is fighting for the same db and pitch range. Need to spread out the lows and highs and such.

On the hat in the background maybe play around with velocity a bit more to make it more natural sounding and creating more grooving beat.

Also does it just loop in the middle and play the same thing twice pretty much? Maybe try and blend the parts together so that awkwardly long silence isn't there.

Pretty good man keep it up! I look forward to hear some new projects and I KNOW if you keep at it you'll get better!

Zxentric responds:

Thank you for the many responses you have submitted, I’m still fairly new to this but I’ll try my best with mixing up some things as the sounds will feel better more natural sounding in the near future. Thank you!

YO! those drums are so natural sounding I love it. This isn't in standard tuning is it?
This is awesome man.

Yoshiii343 responds:

It's in standard tuning! The rhythm guitar can be played on the *A, D and G strings.

EDIT: forgot my own riffs lol

I'm almost angry at how you were really good even back in 2014 and have only gotten better.

JohnMontoya responds:

I'm glad you like it! Hearing it now makes me cringe because I've learned so much since then. :D

Great breakbeat jungle drums man. The way you setup the almost random sounding bass hits makes this super interesting to listen to. nice work dude

JohnMontoya responds:

I grew up with this kind of music. A new buddy of mine picks out presets from hardware ROMplers and posts his findings online. This song is a result of me watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R73MxFkXJtM

I NEED MORE HARDWARE >__<

Dang dude this brings me back, makes me feel like I'm back in mega-man land, or some other Japanese ps1 game.

That's funny I you mention akai products, I enjoy them as well. I only have the akai mpk mini

JohnMontoya responds:

YESS! I'm so glad that I was able to achieve that sound! There's a reason why I collect vintage music gear--to create authentic 90s video game music! :D You should ask me about the AKAI S6000 I purchased from Frank Klepacki. ;D Thank you so much for your support!

Very nice, dig the beat dude those drums are sick.
only critique is the bass, piano, and that pad in the background follow the same patter the whole song.

I know background music usually shouldn't change too much so that it doesn't get distracting, but I feel like in this groovy application you should be allowed a little more creative freedom.

Rock on man

JohnMontoya responds:

I totally agree. That's one of the main reasons why I wasn't able to finish it! I decided to go ahead and release it as a loop because it sounds pretty cool at its core. Next time, I won't release a sketch. :)

Thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate it. I always take constructive feedback to heart so this will stick with me!

Overall awesome vibes and composition really digging it.

@ 0:36 does a note hit wrong? or was it intentional dissonance?

@1:21 nice pan on the drum fills!

Awesome way to change it up for the second chorus, song sounds like a slightly less energetic Hotline Miami song.

nice work and rock on man

Ditchy responds:

Awesome review!

Yeah 0.36 mark was intentional...i was going for a slightly offset tone like to give it a malfunctioning, slightly out of tone feel before it kicked in. I thought it sounded ok, but come to think of it now, with a good set of ears, this may sound out place to some people.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Thank you for stopping by my profile!
I do some music stuff and play games. Haven't been on Newgrounds for a while but I think it will be fun to get back into it.
Feel free to pm me for collabs or just to chat!
